After the ceremony, James invites us to join them at Omnia, a nightclub inside Caesars Palace where they’re staying. I’m guessing it’s mostly to be polite. I’m indifferent, but Corey shrugs at me.

“Sure, we’d love to go,” he replies. “Can’t stay long, though. Big day tomorrow.”

Inside the limo, he turns to me. “Is that okay? I totally wouldn’t feel guilty about ghosting him if you’d rather not.”

I smile at him. “What the hell? We’re in Vegas. Might as well live a little and stay out until ten.”

He roars with laughter.

The nightclub is every bit as opulent as the rest of the hotel. A special room has been set up with catered food, and there’s even a multi-layer wedding cake. We stay to eat and for cake, and then the guests start heading out into the main area as the DJ gets warmed up. I can’t help but note that James seems curiously detached during all of the goings-on, like he’s just going through the motions. For her part, the bride seems quite happy. She’s a nice enough woman too, and doesn’t seem to know anything about the past James and I have.

Corey brings me a vodka soda and a simple club soda for himself, and the long day catches up with me. It’s barely nine thirty, and I’m ready to hit the hay.

He nudges me with his elbow. “C’mon, sleepyhead. Let’s get you back to the hotel and to bed. You look like you’re going to collapse any second.”

“No argument there.” I set my mostly empty glass down and turn to leave, but James catches up with us.

“Thanks for today, Briar,” he says. “I appreciate you changing your mind. I’m sure the pictures are going to be fantastic. You got my payment, right?”

“I did,” I say politely. “Thanks. I’ll send you a link to the prints once I have them edited. Give me about a month, okay?”

He nods. “Sounds great. I appreciate it.” He squeezes my arm, then extends a hand toward Corey. “Good to see you, man. We’ll be at the show tomorrow. You’ve got a good woman here. Take care of her.”

Corey shakes his hand. “No worries there. See you tomorrow night.”

He slips his arm around my waist, and we head toward the club entrance. It’s like leaving an entirely different world behind, the dark nightclub and pounding music for the quiet placidness of the hotel.

We take our time meandering through the palace. Corey smirks down at me. “Well. I’m sort of bummed I didn’t get to pull out the piece de resistance.”

“What’s that?” I ask, amused.

“I was going to kiss you.”

I stop in my tracks. “Really?”

“Is that so hard to believe?”

“I just…” I trail off, swallowing. “It’s an interesting thought,” I finish lamely.

He places his hands on my waist and walks me backward until my back touches the wall of a small offshoot that leads to a door that says “Employees Only.”

“I still can, of course,” he murmurs, tilting his head down until his breath brushes my lips.
